Pocket watches were the trend before wrist watches became popular during the 16th century. Such watches were usually attached to a chain which allowed these to cling on to a man’s waistcoat, belt loop or the lapel.

Pocket watches came in two types during this era. One was the open-face pocket watches that consisted of the winding stem at the crown of the dial. E. Howard Pocket Watches were one of the brands of pocket watches available during this time. E. Howard and Company commenced business in 1857. Its first set of pocket watches was released in 1858 and became an instant hit with the public who considered these the finest watches designed.  Edward Howard scripted his initials ‘E. Howard & Co., Boston’ on the enamel dials of all his creations. The company operated until the great depression when it lost most of its finances. The right to use this inscription was sold to the Keystone Watch Case, a watch case making company.
