In 1881, Achille Ditesheim, barely 19 years old founded his own company in Switzerland and was soon joined by three of his brothers. In 1905, a new modern factory was built and a new company name was introduced:Movado.
Movado means "always in motion" in the international language of Esperanto.

Movado Pocket Watches have been manufactured since 1881, when a 19 year old kid had the audacity to hire several watch makers and open up shop. That kid was Achilles Ditesheim. It wasn’t until 1905, however, that Mr. Ditesheim changed the name of his product to Movado, which means ‘always in motion.’ This is a fitting name for the Movado Pocket Watches of yesterday and today.

It isn’t just the superior craftsmanship of the Movado Pocket Watches that set them apart from other watches, however. It is also the artistic design of each watch as well. You see, Mr. Ditesheim was always a lover of art, and he quickly learned to include art in his watch designs to make them stand out from other watches.

It was a well thought out concept that worked in the early 1900s, and still works today, as Movado still hires world famous artists to design watches. In fact, this concept has won the Movado Pocket Watch brand over 200 awards internationally for design, and many of those awards are also for time technology – which means that Movado Pocket Watches aren’t just for showing off; they are also made to operate in a superior fashion as well.

Today, collectors often seek antique Movado Pocket Watches. Of the many different brands that exist today – as well as brands that no longer even exist – the Movado brand is above all the most unique simply because of the artwork.
